Avanzando Center Research Scholar Project: “Check Mate: Fighting Colorectal Cancer Through Screening”
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of a colorectal cancer (CRC) Screening Program that utilizes the Avanzando Center screening tool for the non-medical drivers of health (Screening Tool), provides participant-tailored resource guides, and patient navigation to improve screening adherence amongst UT Health San Antonio primary care patients between the ages of 45-75, who are due or overdue for CRC screening and live in census tracts identified as being in persistent poverty.
The non-medical drivers of health to be addressed in this study include: healthcare access and quality, economic stability, neighborhood and built environment, and more. This will be accomplished by: 1) conducting a two-arm randomized controlled trial to determine the effectiveness of a Colorectal Cancer Screening Program (Arm 2) vs. usual care (Arm 1), on screening adherence among mostly Latino, male patients, between ages 45-75, who are due or overdue for CRC screening and live in census tracts identified as being in persistent poverty; and 2) utilizing several health frameworks to contextualize the effectiveness of the CRC Screening Program.
