SALSI Health Disparities Research Forum
In 2003, authorized by the 77th Texas Legislature, the UT System, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and UT San Antonio (UTSA) formed the San Antonio Life Sciences Institute (SALSI) to promote greater scientific collaboration between the two institutions. SALSI makes grant funding available to Health Science Center and UTSA faculty. This includes the annual SALSI Health Disparities Research Forum, coordinated by the Institute for Health Promotion Research at the UT Health Science Center, aims to unite those researching health disparities at each institution to stimulate interests and opportunities for future collaboration and communication.

The 1st SALSI Health Disparities Research Forum was held Sept. 12, 2008, in San Antonio. The meeting, which had participation from several dozen researchers from the Health Science Center and UTSA, featured a keynote speech by Texas demographer Dr. Karl Eschbach and four different panels related to health disparities research: behavioral risk factors; chronic diseases; maternal and child health; and mental health.
The 2nd SALSI Health Disparities Research Forum: Latino Obesity was held May 10, 2011, in San Antonio. The meeting, which had participation from several dozen researchers from the Health Science Center and UTSA, featured speeches by Texas State Demographer Dr. Lloyd Potter and master chef Mark Erickson, as well as three different panels on programs, interventions and strategies to reduce Latino obesity in Texas and beyond.
