Tobacco Prevention and Quit-Smoking Materials

The San Antonio Tobacco Prevention & Control Coalition (SA-TPCC), a new multi-organization partnership, aims to conduct a tobacco prevention campaign to create and promote a “smoke-free” city. The coalition, funded by the Texas Department of State Health Services, is led by the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District with help from the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR).

The IHPR developed a SA-TPCC Community-Based Needs Assessment, which assessed the baseline situation, short- and long-term goal changes and community change related to tobacco prevention and control in San Antonio. The IHPR also developed the Secondhand Smoke Policies in Bexar County, 2010 report, which did a GIS analysis of the impact of a potential smoking prohibition in San Antonio bars and restaurants.

The IHPR helps the SA-TPCC develop and distribute bilingual materials, such as a magazine,¡Buena Vida! A Guide to Help You Quit Smoking, to provide Latinos with offers info, tools and tips for quitting smoking:

The SA-TPCC also releases a periodic newsletter, ¡Salud! San Antonio: Promoting Healthy Lives among Latinos, developed by the IHPR. The newsletter features the stories of Latinos who have quit smoking, the experiences they faced and the methods they used to quit.
