We’re Hiring Community Behavioral Health Faculty Members!
The Department of Population Health Sciences at UT Health San Antonio — home to the Salud America! program in the Institute for Health Promotion Research — is seeking two applicants for open-rank faculty positions in community behavioral health and biostatistics.
The two positions will also serve in the Population Science and Prevention research program at the Mays Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center at UT Health San Antonio.

“Our goal is to recruit two faculty members who will establish meaningful community-based and community-engaged research in our diverse and medically underserved 38-county catchment area of South Texas,” said Dr. Amelie Ramirez, chair of the Department of Population Health Sciences and leader of Salud America! and the Institute for Health Promotion Research.

About the Community Behavioral Health Faculty Position
These two faculty positions will be expected to establish an innovative, independent, collaborative, and extramurally funded research program with a focus on community-based participatory and/or community engagement research.
Candidates should have:
- track records of creativity and productivity
- a desire to integrate into our exciting, collaborative, and growing community of researchers
- research that addresses population health sciences priorities, such as engaging community voice, community development and resiliency, health disparities, and multi-level approaches to addressing systemic health inequity
Candidates must have a:
- PhD, DrPH, or equivalent degree in Public Health, Population Health, Health Promotion, Community Health or a related field
- Successful research agenda
- Experience with successful research proposal development and peer-reviewed publications focused on one of the research priorities listed earlier
The appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience.
Faculty will be eligible to apply for grants from the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT), the second-largest cancer research-funding agency in the US. CPRIT also provides competitive faculty recruitment awards for instigators new to Texas.
“A successful candidate will have strong training in CBPR [community-based participatory research] methods with substantial professional experience in community engagement and mixed-methods research,” Ramirez said. “Strong preference will be given to candidates with expertise to establish and manage a research program to develop novel methods in CBPR or innovative applications of existing methods. Candidates must possess excellent communication writing and academic leadership skills.”
About the Biostatician Faculty Position
Biostatistician candidates must have:
- PhD or equivalent in Biostatistics, Statistics or related field
- Expertise in longitudinal data, causal inference, methods for large healthcare databases, statistical genomics applied to clinical outcomes, or clinical trial design
- Evidence of independent methodological and interdisciplinary collaborative research potential
- Teaching experience
- Proven ability to communicate and lead across quantitative and biomedical fields
Preference will be given to a candidate with experience in adaptive clinical trials, development of dynamic treatment algorithms, and learning healthcare systems.
About the Department of Population Health Sciences at UT Health San Antonio
The Department of Population Health Sciences at UT Health San Antonio has 21 faculty with expertise in social and behavioral sciences, epidemiology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, health systems science, and clinical informatics.
Active areas of research include social determinants of health, cancer survivorship, and cancer health disparities.
Similarly, the Population Science and Prevention research program at Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio has more than 58 faculty conducting research in areas of basic science, translational research, clinical research and prevention, and personalized risk assessment.
Both programs have established research portfolios in cancer care delivery, cancer screening, cancer survivorship, and dissemination and implementation of science research to promote health equity in rural and medically underserved communities.
“Our vibrant group of multidisciplinary faculty conducts research on a wide range of health issues, and there are opportunities to collaborate with clinical, and other faculty across the academic campuses of UT Health San Antonio,” Ramirez said.
