San Antonio Life Sciences Institute (SALSI) Health Disparities Research Forum
SUMMARY
In 2003, authorized by the 77th Texas Legislature, the UT System, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and UT San Antonio (UTSA) formed the San Antonio Life Sciences Institute (SALSI) to promote greater scientific collaboration between the two institutions. SALSI makes grant funding available to Health Science Center and UTSA faculty. The SALSI Health Disparities Research Forum, first held Sept. 12, 2008, in San Antonio, was organized with assistance from the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR) at the Health Science Center and brought together those researching health disparities at each institution to stimulate interests and opportunities for future collaboration and communication.

CONCLUSIONS
The first SALSI Health Disparities Research Forum was held Sept. 12, 2008, in San Antonio. The meeting, which had participation from several dozen researchers from the Health Science Center and UTSA, featured a keynote speech by Texas demographer Dr. Karl Eschbach and four different panels related to health disparities research: behavioral risk factors; chronic diseases; maternal and child health; and mental health.
PUBLICATIONS
The IHPR issued a SALSI Health Disparities Research Forum report in November 2008.
